Soft pretzels have earned their status as a beloved snack cherished by people from all corners of the globe. With their chewy texture and delicious taste, they make a satisfying treat any time of the day. Making soft pretzels at home is surprisingly easy, and in this detailed recipe, I'll guide you step-by-step to make soft pretzels at home that are even tastier than your favorite bakery.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups warm water (110–115°F) 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast; 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt 1/4 cup baking soda Coarse salt for topping

Instructions

 Activate the yeast:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit until foamy, about 5–10 minutes. This process activates the yeast, which will help the pretzels rise.

 Mix the dough:

Add the flour, melted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until the dough comes together. You can use a wooden spoon or your hands for this step. The dough should be slightly sticky, but not too sticky. If it is too dry, add a little more water. If it is too sticky, add a little more flour.

Knead the dough:

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Kneading helps develop the gluten in the dough, which gives pretzels their distinctive flavor. If you're new to kneading, fold the dough over itself, then push it down with the heel of your hand, and repeat.

 Let the dough rise.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size. This allows the yeast to ferment and produce carbon dioxide, which causes the dough to rise.

 Preheat the oven:

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease the pretzels to prevent them from sticking.

Shape the pretzels:

Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release air bubbles. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 18 inches long. To shape the pretzels, make each rope into a U shape, then cross the ends and press them under the U to create the classic pretzel shape. Alternatively, you can simply twist the dough into a pretzel shape.

Prepare a baking soda bath:

In a shallow dish, dissolve baking soda in 3 cups of warm water. Dip each pretzel into the water mixture, making sure to coat both sides. The baking soda bath is what gives the pretzels their signature golden color and chewy texture.

Top the pretzels:

Place the dipped pretzels on the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle each pretzel with coarse salt for added flavor and texture. You can also experiment with other toppings like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or cheese.

Bake the pretzels:

Bake the pretzels in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until golden brown. Keep an eye on them, as the oven temperature may vary. You'll know they're done when they're beautifully golden and slightly crispy on the outside.

COOL AND ENJOY:

Remove the pretzels from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. They are best enjoyed warm and fresh out of the oven, but they can also be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a day or two. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such as mustard, cheese sauce, or honey mustard.
